It’s been over one year since the release of Ventura, CA rapper KYLE’s album Beautiful Loser.  I was first introduced to the animated rapper/singer after a long day of listening to Pandora. Since that day, his debut album has been in heavy rotation. Recently dropping the single “Just a Picture” ft. Kehlani last month, Super Duper KYLE has kept fans’ ears busy as they await his next project. Their wishes were granted last week when he tweeted “Who is ready for some new music” 45 minutes before the release of the song. The anticipation built up as he created the hashtag  #WaitOnMe.

Super Duper fan’s were invited to glimpse a different side of the usual playful and goofy rapper as he premiered “Wait on Me,” a sincere ode to his late grandfather, Thomas Marty. Produced by Sonny Norway and Beni Haze, this dedication track allows listeners to view a more serious KYLE that is rarely shown in his music.

“Trying to get through this verse without me f—— crying. Suck it up. You gotta be a man gotta take care of your fam. That’s what he was saying right before he died.”

I’ll be honest, initially the song sounded a bit muffled but after another listen I was able to latch onto the emotions exuding from the speakers. I respect KYLE for taking a step out of his lighthearted musical comfort zone and sharing a personal piece of his life. Along with the arrival of the melodic dedication, KYLE released these words:

“This is the most personal story I’ve told thus far in my music. It’s a about a promise.. a promise a 16 year old me made to my grandfather as he was passing away. He told me one day your family will need you…the world will need you, it will be dark and cold and lonely but they will need you to shine. He told me to keep my family together when he’s gone..to be light for them in our darkest hour. I’ve spent a long time waiting for that light to shine.. waiting to wake up a superhero who can save the day.. even changed my name to SuperDuperKyle… It’s not easy becoming a hero.. but there’s a hero inside of us all.. Grandpa I haven’t forgotten my promise to you.. my promise to our family.. I will bring us out of the darkness.. I will be the man you knew I could be.. I’m almost there.. Wait on me.”

Rest easy Thomas Marty….
