There was no better way to begin the new year celebrations than by bringing it in with the Funk!
On December 30, Lunaface and #aReallyKoolParty brought to HTX the sounds of Mordern-Funk by way of Stones Throw‘s own Dåm Funk. On a mission to bless the 3rd coast by doing a Texas Run, Dåm Funk brought in the new year and made H-town’s Boondocks a funk way station on the eve of NYE. Although I missed out on Houston’s own Flash Gordon Parks and Dj Dayta’s sets (get familiar), I walked in just as he was taking over the tables.
“I was vaguely familiar with Dam Funk and had heard good things but his live performance surpassed my expectations! I loved how interactive he was with his audience and how he showed so much love for Houston. I definitely will make it a priority to see him again.”
For the next 2hrs we partied like ’99 was the pre-teen affair in the garage and we were the grown folks in the backyard– drinks buzzing and music blasting! Dam mixed in his classics like “Hood Pass Intact” and a couple of cuts from the 7 Days of Funk project keeping the vibe going strong. Oh! but wait! When he switched to the vinyls it was over! If you thought you were there for just a drink and a little party, then he took you to a whole other atmosphere. He even dropped a few jewels for those selective ears that search for the unheard and unfamiliar sounds in music that only the enthusiast would appreciate. As a fan I am bias in my opinion of his ability and worth (because I am a fan), but if you claim to enjoy funk/house/electric you missed out on something great. The music and the party weren’t all that was there, you missed out on 1of music’s greatest artist and an even greater Hip Hop experience.
“Dam is a true master a what he does playing mostly vinyl while he spins which you don’t see a lot these days.”
‘Til next time…Peace!!!
